UCAS International Young Scholars Summer School 2023 Call for Application

With students recruited from home and abroad, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) is a world-famous research university in China appealing to global talents. International Young Scholars Summer School is a representative activity of international cooperation and exchange projects at UCAS. This annual 10-day activity welcomes young scholars from abroad.

In the summer of 2023, the UCAS International Young Scholars Summer School invites young scientific and technological talents from around the world to discuss current scientific and technological developments with world-class scientists, visit global first-class high-tech enterprises, and experience the unique charm of the Chinese traditional culture.

UCAS is a research-oriented university that features the integration of scientific research and teaching with various institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Currently, UCAS has nearly 2,000 international students from 96 countries, including over 1,200 foreign doctoral students, which boasts the largest number of international doctoral students in China. UCAS consists of four campuses in Beijing, five education centers outside Beijing and 113 CAS institutes distributed across the country as its academic units.

UCAS International Young Scholars Summer School 2023 is organized respectively by two institutes of CAS – the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology and the Institute of Urban Environment – in the beautiful international coastal cities Shenzhen and Xiamen. This project plans to recruit 50-80 young international scholars with academic backgrounds in Biology, Computer Science, Control Engineering, Ecology, and Environmental Science and Engineering.   1. Application Requirements
  • Non-Chinese citizens.
  • Senior graduate students and master degree holders 35 years old and under (A few exceptions will be made for extraordinarily excellent undergraduate students of third grade or fourth grade).
  • Applicants should major in Biology, Computer Science, Control Engineering, Ecology, and Environmental Science and Engineering.
  • Undergraduate and master’s GPA of academic performance should be no less than 3.0 / 4.0.
  • Non-English speakers and students lacking of English degree courses should score IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80.
  • Students who have rich scientific research experience and are willing to apply for a master’s or doctor’s degree program at UCAS are preferred.

  1. Application Materials

(1) A copy of the personal information page of passport (period of validity for more than six months).

(2) Electronic version of recent two-inch full-faced passport photographs.

(3) Copies of the official undergraduate and master’s graduation certificate /degree certificate and transcripts (graduate students should provide a pre-graduation certificate from the student department of current university stating expected graduation date and transcripts by far).

(4) Certificate of TOEFL/IELTS, documentations proving that all the completed courses are instructed in English, or other proof of English proficiency (native speakers don’t need to provide these).

 

  1. Fees & Expenses

(1) Tuition fee: RMB 8,000 Yuan. Students who sign up early will have an opportunity to apply for a tuition waiver.

(2) International travel expenses: students will cover their own costs.

(3) Organizers will bear the local accommodation expenses and single-way inter-city travel expenses from Shenzhen to Xiamen during the project in China for all participants.

(4) Medical insurance: The organizer will provide Ping An Comprehensive Medical Insurance for students during the project in China (From July 27th to August 6th).

Introduction to UCAS

UCAS, formerly named Graduate School of CAS, was the first graduate school in China. In 2014, UCAS started enrolling undergraduate students, and since then, an intact higher educational system has been established. As the largest graduate education institution in China, UCAS has over 50,000 ongoing students, and more than half of them are doctoral students. Introduction to Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT)

Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), founded in 2006, is the only scientific research institution of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shenzhen, and also the host institution in Shenzhen for the postgraduate training of the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Over the past 17 years, focusing on the multi-disciplinary integration of Information Technology (IT) and Biotechnology (BT), SIAT has effectively promoted the integrative development of scientific research and industrial transformation.

After 17 years of development and accumulation, SIAT has established 8 sub-institutes in different fields, 7 transformation platforms, and multiple industry development funds. The accumulated expenditure undertaken exceeds 17 billion yuan, including approximately 3.6 billion yuan for industrial cooperation. There are 5639 authorized patents, among which 2726 are PCT patents. Staff and students have published over 14000 papers in total, and SIAT has incubated 1582 enterprises, among which 347 are shareholders. SIAT owns 13 full-time academicians, over 150 national level talents, over 900 overseas returnees, with 62 scholars selected as the top 2% of the world’s top scientists.

Based on scientific and educational resources of SIAT, we are actively establishing a new university, which focuses on emerging frontier interdisciplinary disciplines including artificial intelligence, information technology, life health, new energy, and new materials. Introduction to Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)

Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is a public institution affiliated with CAS. It is the only national research institution in the world that specializes in comprehensive research on urban environment. The Institute is located in the beautiful southern coastal city of Xiamen, and has an observation and research station in Ningbo.

At present, the institute offers master’s and doctor’s degrees in Environmental Science and Engineering and Ecology, as well as professional master’s degrees in Resources and Environment. We recruit master’s and doctoral candidates in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Economics and Environmental Management, Ecology, and master’s degree candidates in Resources and Environment. It also hosts “Environmental Science and Engineering” postdoctoral research station. The Institute of Environment, Ecology and Engineering are among the top 1% of ESI international rankings.

The institute of Urban Environment is oriented to the major strategic needs of ecological environment protection in the process of national urbanization, and the developmental frontier of international urban ecological science and environmental science and technology. The institute carries out theoretical research, technology development, system integration and engineering demonstration in the fields including urban ecology, environment and health, urban material energy metabolism and green low-carbon development technology, urban environmental governance and waste recycling technology, and urban planning and environmental policy, providing theoretical, technical and policy support for ensuring urban health, efficiency and safety, as well as serving the national economic and social development.

The advanced and complete scientific research platform built by the Institute serves scientific research and postgraduate education in an all-round way, and has established a high-level scientific research team with overseas talents and strong faculty. A number of national and local key talent programs have been selected, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, winners of the National Outstanding Young Scholars Fund, young and middle-aged Leading Talents in Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Hundred Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Introduction to Shenzhen

Shenzhen is a coastal city in the south of Guangdong province, China. Located on the east bank of the Pearl River estuary, it neighbors Hong Kong to the south, Huizhou to the northeast and Dongguan to the north. Situated in a sub-tropical maritime region, Shenzhen enjoys a pleasant atmosphere, clean air, long beaches and ample sunshine, providing its residents with a comfortable environment to study, work, and live.

As the paradigm of China’s Reform and Opening-up, Shenzhen has become a modern and international metropolis and a core port for international trade. The city is a leading global technology hub, dubbed as China’s Silicon Valley. It is home to headquarters of many multinational companies such as JXD, Vanke, Hytera, CIMC, Tencent, Huawei and BYD.

 

Introduction to Xiamen

Xiamen Island, Known as Jiahe Island in ancient times, is also known as Egret Island. Xiamen is a southeast coastal important central city, port and scenic tourist city. In Chinese, “Xia” in “Xiamen” means “edifice” implying security and stability, while “men” means “thoroughfare”, denoting great breadth. Xiamen is located in the southeast of Fujian Province, with Zhangzhou to the west, Quanzhou to the north, and Kinmen and Dadan Island to the southeast across the sea.

Xiamen is a deputy provincial city and special economic zone, it has emerged from reform and has been thriving since that time. Over the past four decades, Xiamen has been a trailblazer in the development of its Special Economic Zone, advancing by leaps and bounds and achieving historical development on all fronts. The city’s GDP industrial added value and total financial revenue have increased by 862563 and 692 times, respectively, and its urban area has expanded by more than 18 times. Xiamen has been named a “National City of Excellence in Civil Ethics” for six consecutive terms and designated as a showcase city for the Peaceful China Initiative. With a flourishing economy, a high standard of living, and extensive global exchanges, Xiamen is recognized as a “high-quality city for innovation and entrepreneurship” and an “enchanting eco-garden city”.
