The workshop, themed “Climate Change Action and Women”, aims to empower women scientists from developing countries, especially the least developed and less technologically developed countries, to play an important role in climate change action. The workshop invited Ms Tracey Brown OBE, Director of Sense about Science in UK, and Dr. Scott Jones, Co-Director of Mind the Gap Research and Training in Scotland, as well as Prof. ZHAI Panmao, co-Chair of the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Vice Chairman of the National Panel of Experts on Climate Change of China, and other well-known experts and scholars from home and abroad, brought in-depth explanations on cutting-edge issues of climate change to the participants. Inspiring discussions were also held on the leadership, project management and science policy communication of women scientists in climate change action.
In addition to lectures, the workshop also organized a variety of interactive sessions and field visits. The participants visited the Earth System Numerical Simulation Device, a major scientific and technological infrastructure of the country during the 12th Five-Year Plan Period, and the rainwater utilization project of the Beijing Olympic Central Area, and gained an in-depth understanding of China’s practical experience in tackling climate change and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
International students of UCAS from Ethiopia, Iran, Kenya, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania and Tunisia participated in the training course. Through this activity, they not only broadened their horizons, but also improved their comprehensive literacy in the field of climate change and gender equality. After the training course, they will bring their knowledge and experience back to the university to guide relevant research and practice, and lay a solid professional foundation for helping global climate action in the future.
